What Decision Are You Avoiding?
Free yourself
When clients come to me for coaching, they already know what they want. They just don’t know it yet. We spend quite a bit of time in the beginning of the session unpacking what they want to work on, which is usually getting clarity or unstuck around a certain situation, when what I hear and sense is that they have the clarity. They’re just afraid to act on it.
The thing is, I’ve been there. I’ve considered, obsessed and ruminated about decisions and consulted with friends and the internet to no end before making decisions that I knew deep down I needed to make. But I realized that in checking in with everyone, I was getting nowhere.
And I get it, making decisions—especially big life decisions—can come with consequences and a shift in the direction of our life. However, when we avoid making a decision or outsource our power of decisiveness, we prolong the inevitable. Have you ever heard the phrase “let go, or be dragged?” It applies here.
When we make decisions, we’re either releasing or allowing something. And refusing to do either creates a tension and kind of suffering that’s sometimes greater than making the decision.
For me, when I decided to end my relationship of 9-years, I had already put myself through years of suffering of considering the decision and being in limbo. Even though my intuition was screaming at me, telling me in my dreams, messages I received in everyday life and whispers I heard internally.
I believe in nuance, timing and reality, which means that every decision isn’t black and white. Living in the gray area or a short period of limbo can be just as valuable. But if its sole purpose is to delay then it might be harmful.
Ask yourself: What decision am I avoiding? What about my job/relationship/behavior/thinking (fill in the blank) needs to change? Once you get honest with yourself you can create change. Remember, the universe responds to a made up mind.
Take care.

I’m Shanetta McDonald, a somatic life coach, writer, and veteran publicist who’s a guide for folks learning to live more fully in their truth. Over the past decade, I’ve helped shape the stories of changemakers, creatives, and mission-driven brands. Now, I help people—especially women—release perfection, reconnect with their bodies, and rewrite the narratives that no longer serve them.
Whether you’re a high-achiever learning to soften, a mother reclaiming herself, or a creative trying to find your voice again, you’re in the right place. My work is rooted in nervous system awareness, embodied storytelling, and the belief that your inner wisdom already knows the way.
